Game fourteen of the Brisbane Premier League was the clash of the Gold Coast Waveriders and the Southern Rockets. Rajiv Chandraseker and Leigh Drennan led their teams to battle, where the Rockets won the toss and chose to bowl first.
The Rockets got to work early with Sam Neale and Lachlan Honan taking wickets early. This Hugo Burdon came to the crease for the Waveriders and made batting look easier than anyone has on a difficult wicket. Striking six 4’s and a six, Burdon didn’t go without a fight in his 62 off 49 balls. But with little support around him, the Waveriders only managed 9/127 from their 20 overs.
“The pitch was fine I think… Those cutters that were back of a length were a bit two paced. I was hoping they’d bowl a bit shorter so I could hit with the wind” said Burdon jokingly following his innings.
The old saying of ‘catches win matches’ was at the fore of the Waveriders defence of 127, where multiple dropped catches in the field contributed to their loss. Rockets opener Matthew Weaver struck 40 runs off 24 balls, with Jack Hargreaves and Nick McGill scoring 20* and 21* each to see them to the end.
The Southern Rockets won by 4 runs with 12 balls remaining, securing their first win in the competition.
